Self-Transformation Prayer Service

Join us for the Self-Transformation Prayer Service (Bup-In-Jeol) in Won Buddhism, an annual spiritual holiday dedicated to personal and collective awakening. This special day commemorates the profound dedication of Sotaesan’s disciples, who embarked on a 100-day prayer for the salvation of all beings. On August 21, 1919, Sotaesan guided his nine core disciples to offer a prayer for the salvation of all beings. When they pressed their bare thumbs on a white sheet of paper, on which was written, “Sacrifice with no regret,” it is said that nine fingerprints appeared in blood. This event, known as the Miracle of the Blood Seal on the White Paper, is regarded as the spiritual foundation of Won Buddhism.

After this miraculous event, Sotaesan gave dharma names to the nine disciples, saying, “Your past names were secular names and individual, private appellations. The people who had been given those names have already died. Now I have called you back to life by bestowing upon you these new public names for use throughout the world. Receive and keep your name in honor and deliver numerous sentient beings.”

Following this tradition, our temple holds a Dharma Name Ceremony, where members receive their Won Buddhist dharma names. This ceremony signifies the beginning of a new spiritual journey on the path to awakening.
